“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. SAYODHYA is an initiative started in 2010 by a group of women employees working with children at risk. We felt impelled to start this home after witnessing increased incidences of violence against women and their children, leading to destitution, desertion and homelessness. We established a short stay home which is a transit refuge center for women and children who are escaping range of abusive situations-physical, sexual and emotional, who have no social support systems to rely on, and also to rehabilitate them.We believe that each survivor of domestic violence has the right to a safe, secure home and the capability to self-determine their violence free future. Psycho-social counselling and training are core mandates of Sayodhaya. That is why we centre our efforts in providing an environment that will help the victims recover from the traumatic effects of victimisation and develop an understanding and awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence, relationship difficulties, build skills and confidence so that they, as to realize the potentials in them to solve their problems, overcome financial hardship to gain independent and self sufficient livelihood means ahead in life.Sayodhya works for a larger social cause of eradicating gender discrimination and gender based violence prevalent in the society through providing training in counselling to the younger generation and youth themselves.

Survivors of sexual violence have very few dedicated shelters, in and around Hyderabad, apart from what government run State Home and Swadhar Homes, women need support beyond shelter and food i.e justice to recover and rehabilitate themselves from their own past and traumatic experience. These survivors are not only deprived of support but are at an increased risk of abuse due to various factors such as fear of authority, high risk behaviours to survive, fear to report or file cases, barriers related to accessing institutional services, lack of services for sexual assault victims, attached stigma, exclusion from community and social activities.Survivors, given the complexity of circumstances, require appropriate timely health services, psychological counselling, legal counselling and assistance and livelihood opportunities, to reweave their lives; rehabilitation and repatriation back to the society. Violence against women and violence against children often happen in the same families, initiating cycles of abuse within the home and across generations. Existing knowledge of how and why they occur together is limited. 
 Safe Slums project is a community-based intervention that aims to prevent gender-based violence against women /girls (VAW/G) through participatory action research. The project involves community counselors and single women collectives to address VAW/G. The project is proposed for implementation in 5 slum communities around Sayodhya short stay Home in Amberpet area, Hyderabad. The target beneficiaries are 1000 households of the neighbourhood who are highly transient, distinguished by lack of access to civic services and livelihood opportunities. The single women households lack support system for violence prevention such as friendly police and primary health centres, free family counselling centres.Sayodhya runs short stay home for these women/young girls in distress, providing emergency response through its 24 hours of emergency telephone help line, arrange for emergency shelter, counselling family members to resolve issues, and in case of critical cases, taking them to women protection cell for further legal process. Sayodhya home, not only provides accommodation and child support to the victim, it also takes care of their children, regardless of their age and gender. The shelter staff closely collaborates with law enforcement agencies and judicial officials to ensure that survivors have access to protection, entitlements and other legal measures to assist with employment opportunities, as well with skill development support, as and when needed.Free family counselling centres at slum level will be established with two women counsellors who shall hear out the cases of violence and provide counselling for victims of domestic violence, families and their children. 
 It is expected that through the provision of support services to survivors, it will be possible to have a direct and positive effect on their well-being. •	Formation of slum level social support groups with survivors of domestic abuse which offer solidarity, mutual support and confidence to its members•	Formation of adolescent girls groups•	Set up efficient community based free family counseling services•	Maintenance of short stay shelter home for victims of violence•	Maintain garment making unit and provide employment to 50 women fighters of abuse.
