“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Self-Reliant India (SRI) is a non-profit organization with a mission to make historically under-resourced communities self-reliant with access to quality education. We aim to enhance the participation of influential and resourceful people of the community in their local government schools by elevating the credibility of these institutions.SRI’s flagship program Nanhe Kalam Fellowship was initiated with the goal to increase the number of students from historically under-resourced schools that get admitted in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV). In this we select local youth who aspire to be future teachers and equip them with the latest teaching pedagogy and skills and these youth prepare government school students for the JNV Selection Test. In the last 5 years, we have assisted 125+ such children get into JNV. When students from government schools clear JNV entrance, it builds the credibility of the school and through this we motivate influential and resourceful members to enroll their children in the government school. This eventually motivates the community to invest resources and time in the management of schools and hence, encourages the community to own the school. We have successfully implemented this model in Raliawas, Rewari, where almost 90% of students now study in government school. SRI vision is to ensure a self-reliant future for 25,000 students every year by assisting them to get into JNV and transforming each &amp; every government school through community ownership.

Primary rural education is suffering a major lag because of several issues. It is not only affecting the present society but the whole future of the community in question. Students are not getting ample opportunities, atmosphere and courage to succeed in life. It is very important for the society to formulate a system to envisage the hidden latent from primary rural students. It is important, not only to provide them quality education but also an atmosphere where they can get energised or motivated to build dreams. They are to be provided with a place where dreams can be turned into reality. 
 Self Reliant India is an organisation focussed to bring self reliance to each sector and community in the nation. We believe education can be the best weapon to develop self reliance. With aims intact, we started Project Nanhe Kalam, wherein students of primary rural government schools are coached for entrance exam of Navodhya schools. Navodhya Schools are a huge success and need no introduction. Induction of our students into these schools will provide them with an atmosphere to think out of the box and turn out as role models for their villages. Most importantly, the teaching staff mainly consists of graduate youth who are preparing for government competitive exams. This way, even youths develop teaching ability. 
 Our work is affecting not only the students and the teachers, but the entire community. We have run this project for almost a year, and the results are overwhelmingly good. There was a selection of 20 students from SRI. The percentage of students getting selected to Navodhya (Rewari), who come from rural government schools, rose by 20% to 25% of the overall selections. This change has bought a ray of hope to villagers and communities are getting attracted to this program.
