The number of homeless and destitute men, women and children in our cities living under appalling conditions, in the streets is quite shocking. They are deprived of basic necessities, often ending up in premature deaths, diseases and not to mention crippling poverty. Thankfully, the Police pick them up and take them to one or the other humanitarian home in Bangalore. RVM Transit Home in Hennur is one such place, supported by Senior Citizens Bangalore. RVM Home is situated in Chikkagubbi village, Hennur, Bangalore where a large number of mentally and physically challenged elderly and young men and women stay. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore assists the RVM Foundation Humanitarian Home in providing food, shelter, medical care and a hygienic environment for the recovery and rehabilitation of its destitute inmates. Many of the residents are mentally ill and are on medication. SCB provides infrastructural facilities such as bedding, solar heater, borewell, and water harvesting. Nutritious food is provided to them with compassion and adequate nutrient requirements of the residents are achieved.Since most of inmates are suffering from very poor health and several physical disabilities, Senior Citizens have focused on intervention with nutrition and medical help. In order to build and improve their immune system SCB started giving nutritious food by providing vegetables, fruits and eggs in their regular meals and to reduce their dependence on medical treatment. SCB also conducts eye check up to the residents and if necessary glasses are also provided. Medical check ups are also conducted for all the residents.Fruits of all kinds are provided regularly with curds or lassi every day. This has brought in a vast improvement in their health and it is visibly evident. The positive energy is clearly visible, and the participation of some of the inmates in some of the events is truly satisfying. Special food is provided to inmates on festivals or birthdays of our membersThe organisation is trying to provide better facilities and infrastructure, but it has not been possible due to lack of funds. 
 Significant improvement in the physical and mental health of the 129 inmates by the provision of healthy and nutritious meals, medicines and health care, and emotional support in a stable and secure environment has been seen.Once the resident is stabilised, he or she is usually moved to a more permanent residence at another Home or NGO.

Humanitarian Home

The lowermost economic segment of Indian citizens sends its children to ‘government’ schools. The schools provide mid-day meals to the students. This scheme has hugely contributed to heath and growth of disadvantaged children. Despite this, many children remain undernourished. This is evident from the below normal (less that 18) Body Mass Index (BMI).   
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supplements the mid-day meal with added nutrition of a boiled egg, banana, nuts chick, and rag malt. The program is run in a government girls school in a rural area near Bangalore. It impacts 300 girl children This supplementation has resulted in improvement of BMI. Improved health is hypothesized to result in better academic performance as well as participation in sports and co curricular activities.

NUTRITION FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED RURAL GIRL STUDENTS

Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports a school for economically disadvantaged girl children in rural Karnataka. Over the years it has upgraded infrastructure, improved nutrition, given scholarships and equipped the school with digital education aids. These initiatives have increase the pass percentage from 76% to 96%. SCB believes that more value can be added by promoting sports and cultural activities 
 SCB is seeking financial assistance in: 1. Special nutrition and training of a girl athlete selected to train for representing India in weight-lifting.2. Organizing Inter-School Sports Competition And Provision Of Sports Attire.3. Organizing Training In Classical And Folk Dance and Music.

PROMOTING SPORTS & CULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN A RURAL GIRLS SCHOOL

The lowermost economic segment of Indian citizens sends its children to ‘government’ schools. When these students clear the SSLC / Class Xth Board exams, they go to government or private colleges where the fee is quite steep by their standards. A degree course in Commerce could range from INR15,000 to 30,000 per year. The parents take loans from local money lenders and get sucked into the cycle of debt. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) identifies meritorious students from a pre-selected set of government run schools and offers scholarships and educational assistance to such underprivileged students till they complete their higher education. The parents are usually construction labourers, security guards, vegetable vendors, auto drivers, poor farmers or those engaged in household work. SCB makes no distinction of caste or religion with regard to meritorious students. Many beneficiaries have gone on to become engineers, accountants and other such qualifications that have transformed their family’s economic condition. Some have even completed PhD and given expression to their passion for academics.
