"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. The number of homeless and destitute men, women and children in our cities living under appalling conditions, in the streets is quite shocking. They are deprived of basic necessities, often ending up in premature deaths, diseases and not to mention crippling poverty. Thankfully, the Police pick them up and take them to one or the other humanitarian home in Bangalore. RVM Transit Home in Hennur is one such place, supported by Senior Citizens Bangalore. RVM Home is situated in Chikkagubbi village, Hennur, Bangalore where a large number of mentally and physically challenged elderly and young men and women stay. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore assists the RVM Foundation Humanitarian Home in providing food, shelter, medical care and a hygienic environment for the recovery and rehabilitation of its destitute inmates. Many of the residents are mentally ill and are on medication. SCB provides infrastructural facilities such as bedding, solar heater, borewell, and water harvesting. Nutritious food is provided to them with compassion and adequate nutrient requirements of the residents are achieved.Since most of inmates are suffering from very poor health and several physical disabilities, Senior Citizens have focused on intervention with nutrition and medical help. In order to build and improve their immune system SCB started giving nutritious food by providing vegetables, fruits and eggs in their regular meals and to reduce their dependence on medical treatment. SCB also conducts eye check up to the residents and if necessary glasses are also provided. Medical check ups are also conducted for all the residents.Fruits of all kinds are provided regularly with curds or lassi every day. This has brought in a vast improvement in their health and it is visibly evident. The positive energy is clearly visible, and the participation of some of the inmates in some of the events is truly satisfying. Special food is provided to inmates on festivals or birthdays of our membersThe organisation is trying to provide better facilities and infrastructure, but it has not been possible due to lack of funds. 
 Significant improvement in the physical and mental health of the 129 inmates by the provision of healthy and nutritious meals, medicines and health care, and emotional support in a stable and secure environment has been seen.Once the resident is stabilised, he or she is usually moved to a more permanent residence at another Home or NGO.

Humanitarian Home

Schools catering to the economically disadvantaged are constantly in need for enhanced physical infrastructure and maintenance of existing infrastructure. Many schools lack functional toilets, have dilapidated classrooms, and unhygienic kitchens to cook the mid-day meal.  
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports such schools in Bangalore and rural areas near the city. To improve basic school infrastructure we are seeking financial support to:1. Building of clean toilets in 2 schools2. Building sewerage to avoid unhygienic waste water logging around the toilet area in 1 school3. Provide utilities for the kitchen in 1 school 
 The infrastructure listed above cater to basic necessities such as clean toilets and hygienic meals.

BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN SCHOOLS FOR THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED

First generation learners need extra support to realise their academic potential. They usually attend government schools with not much pedagogical aids to support the otherwise dedicated teachers. Supporting them with digital education aids will have a multiplier effect on improving learning. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports such schools in Bangalore city as well as rural areas near the city. To enhance learning we seek funds to install Digital white boards, provide laptops and tablets to students and teachers, and Byju course content software. 
 1. This initiative has improved school pass results from 76% four years ago to 96% now. 2. Equipping teachers with laptops helps them maintain records of each child, and prepare lessons in advance3. Tablets are school property which students use till they graduate. It helps them access Byju software and improve their learning.4. Students who earn our scholarships for higher education are provided with laptops required in such institutions.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE THROUGH DIGITAL AIDSFOR THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED

The number ofdestitute in our cities is appalling. They live in shockingly sub-human conditions on the streets. Deprived of basic necessities, they face disease, hunger, and certain premature death. The lucky ones are rescued by a sensitized police force and taken to one or the other humanitarian homes. AiRHumanitarian Home inBangalore, supported by Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) is one such place.It caters to approximately 150 elderly men and women destitute. Besides physical debilitation,the trauma of sub-human living has affected their mental healthtoo. The home provides shelter, a hygienic environment, nutritious food, medical care and rehabilitation. Most importantly it provides hope and human kindness to fellow humans most in need.  
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports the home with food, medical care and infrastructural facilities. It is seeking funds to equip the facility’s kitchen with industrial scale cooking appliances such as automatic roti maker; commercial wet grinder, steam cooker for rice, sambhar, vegetables; commercial idli maker.  
 1. Improvement in hygienic cooking will impact health of inmates already severely challenged with health issues. 2. The increased capacity of the kitchen will enhance the capacity of the home overall and enable them to take in more inmates.
