“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. The COVID-19 health emergency has brought unprecedented changes and uncertainty for young children and their families. In India, 320 million children have been affected by school closures. While education has shifted to digital platforms for most classes, millions of pre-primary children especially those from low resourced communities and marginalised families, are losing out on any form of education. Unable to attend the local Anganwadi centre or government/low cost private school, no understanding of digital or tech based education, no or very little home learning material and little or no support from parents/caregivers at home, these children are faced with a growing development gap.Since the lockdown, 5 year old Ruma is one among thousands of children who are unable to attend school and do not have access to basic learning materials at home. In the absence of smartphones, they are unable to access digital, technology-based learning. Locked in at home, children are missing the story books, activity sheets, pencils and crayons that made learning fun, which are critical for early childhood education. 
 Sesame Workshop proposes to reach 10,000 children in Delhi-NCR between 3-8 years old with a joyful learning kit comprising a mix of storybooks/ activity worksheets/crayons/pencils/writing sheets. Each kit has a QR code that can be used to access more resources from our #CaringForEachOther microsite focusing on healthy habits, learning from home, and socio-emotional development.Learning materials that allow a child to touch, create, and imagine are critical hands-on stimuli for early childhood development. Early childhood educators emphasize the importance of learning through exploring, touching, feeling and manipulating concrete materials and play a key role in facilitating learning.
