“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Seven Sisters Development Assistance (SeSTA) is a culmination of efforts to initiate development work to empower communities in remote rural areas of NE India. Registered in the year 2011, under Societies Registration Act (SRA), 1860, SeSTA was conceived to put systematic effort for socio-economic development of NE by building capabilities of poor communities, promoting and strengthening their institutions to facilitate them out of poverty and meaningfully participate in the global economy.  SeSTA collectivizes women to form Self Help Groups (SHGs), builds their capabilities and strengthens livelihood systems to alleviate mass poverty in far flung villages of Northeast India. Scientific agriculture interventions in food crop and vegetable crops, Natural Resources Management and supporting the intensification and diversification of other livelihoods portfolio like goat rearing, piggery, fisheries, mushroom cultivation, access to clean energy, work on gender justice and governance has helped economically and socially empower communities in these villages.

Already helpless due to low farm productivity, thousands of small and marginalized farmers are being hardest hit by climate change. Large scale distress migration, due to lack of economic opportunities or adequate skills, is now a realty for thousands of families in rural India.  In remote pockets of rural Northeast India, these issues are even more prominent. Additionally, linkages to mainstream markets are limited resulting in poor returns for agriculture products. Therefore the poverty rates in NE (more than 30% in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur) is very high.  
 There is an urgent need to introduce climate change resilient scientific organic agricultural practices in crops in communities integrating it with nutrition rich crops. Promoting diversity and sustainable organic agriculture through System of Root Intensification (SRI) in all crops combines traditional knowledge with cutting edge science to improve productivity. Introduction of other appropriate technologies like drip and machan/trellis in vegetables as well as promoting orchards can significantly improve incomes. Diversification of existing livelihoods portfolio for better animal husbandry practices and scaling up of existing options like piggery, goat rearing etc. can help communities withstand not only climate change related uncertainties but also open up new and better avenues of employment.  
 The immediate impact of these interventions is year round food security, better availability of nutritious food at the household level, improvement in technical knowledge and skills related to livelihood practices in food crop as well as cash crops, animal husbandry and other areas leading to diversification and better financial returns. Families also report improved and increased flock of livestock like pig and goats. Household report increased food consumption and more wholesome diet with regular consumption of green vegetables and pulses. Women from the community also start micro-entrepreneurial activities along with reaching out to markets directly instead of depending on middlemen. A cadre of women farmers, equipped with technical skills, emerge. Livelihoods diversification and new practices also allows communities to withstand the uncertainties of climate. Under this project, SeSTA will support 100 families to double their incomes and come out of poverty.
