For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Sree Subramania Trust, a non-profit that is purely charitable in nature and fully welfare oriented, with its office located at the premises of Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home, Karikkamkulam, Kozhikode-673010, was registered as per Section 6 of the Indian Trusts Act, 1882, in the year 2011 with the solid aim of helping the beneficiaries of a large number of economically backward patients approaching Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home seeking treatment against different kinds of diseases but are unable to afford the treatment costs, stay rents, food requirements, and travel costs, etc and require support for them. At the same time, there are affordable and rich who are willing to help donate for the cause of the needy by way of cash and kind to run the Trust. Sree Subramania Trust, thus formed and Registered as per Society Act, has the Partners of Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home as Trustees of Sree Subramania Trust proper management and preservation of property. Being closely attached to Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home, Kozhikode, which is a NABH accredited hospital now, a number of poor patients are benefited from the charitable deeds of the Trust especially when the costs of their treatments are waived and the financial burden taken over by the institution by way of charity, thus fulfilling the main objective of forming the Charitable Trust.  However, due to certain peculiar circumstances followed by the COVID-19 situation faced in the country as a whole, the inflow of patients especially those coming from far-flung tribal belt areas seeking medical aid was reduced for a number of reasons including travel restrictions leading to inactiveness of the Trust activities for some time. Consequent to the restoration near normalcy of the COVID-19 situation, the management of the Trust felt the need of restoring its community welfare activities from its dormant stage. Following vigorous persuasion by the Trust Members to find a viable solution to the problems, especially when they came in contact with the Rotary Clubs working in the District, the suggestion of the construction of 10 houses for the economically backward homeless poor families to near mitigate their suffering for which the Subramania Trust will have a lead role, has found a way by the Trust to activate it from the dormant stage. Hence, a beginning has been made to actively participate in the community development activities of the Rotary Clubs in the district as an element of Trust’s future plan of action with the principle of ‘together we can achieve the goal through implementation. The Trust is currently maintaining its Bank Account with ICICI BANK, NADAKKAVU BRANCH, Calicut. As a charitable Trust, Sree Subramania Trust has the facility of claiming exemption from Income Tax, as the case may be, in respect of incomes applied to charitable or religious purposes. The Trust thus in coordination with the District Rotary Clubs intends to actively participate in the fund's collection drive from the privileged society for the benefit of the underprivileged people of the society.

A large section of economically backwards homeless poor families living in the District has been approaching the Rotary Club of Calicut South to help find a solution to the immediate necessity of allotment of a small budget dream house for their living. It is seen that most of the homeless identified are just living only in sheds without rooftops covered by tarpaulin sheets. They are unable to bear the cost of land and construction with the low wage earnings of one or two in the family on a day-to-day basis. Besides, the trauma of meeting the educational needs of children of such living families is unbearable.The Rotary Club District involved in the community welfare activities has been consistently pursuing various aspects of low-cost housing projects introduced by the Government agencies such as Pradhan Mantri Aavas Yojana and Life Mission Projects but the requirements are in large number which warrants approaching suitable donors as sponsors for the construction. In such a scenario, the Club decided to approach various Trusts functioning in the District involved in charitable activities who could contribute to the cause by way of sponsorship. Sree Subramania Trust, Karikkamkulam, Kozhikode (Kerala), India which is involved in charitable work by way of free treatment to the poorest living in the remotest Adivasi areas of the district, came forward to contribute in a positive manner. Sree Subramania Trust in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Calicut South proposed the construction of 10 low-cost houses in the district for genuine homeless families. 
 It is intended to utilize the background of the Sree Subramania Trust which is involved in the charitable cause and is a registered institution in the District that has the facility of ‘Income Tax’ Exemption to the donors who donate sums for the community welfare schemes by the SS Trust in coordination with the Rotary Club of Calicut South which also has such facilities.Our Vision: Provide access to a living space for homeless families in the societyOur Mission: Enabling underprivileged people to have access to live a healthy and sustainable livelihood(shelter, food, clothing, well-being)How can you help: A small donation can make big difference in someone's life. This would facilitate the accessibility of the applicant to the best accommodative area of their living in the District as far as possible.
