“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Late	Ms	Prema	Gopalan,	as	Founder	and	Executive	Director	of	Swayam	Shikshan	Prayog,	developed	an inclusive,	participatory,	and	women-led	approach	to	disaster	management	through	her	pioneering	work of	community-led	rehabilitation	and	reconstruction	in	1200	villages	after	the	devastating	1993	Latur Earthquake. Swayam	Shikshan	Prayog	(SSP)	which	stands	for	Self-Education	for	Empowerment	was	formally	registered in	1998.	For	the	last	24	years,	SSP	has	facilitated	sustainable	community	development	by	building	capacities of	grassroots	women’s	collectives	to	lead	social	and	economic	transformation	in	climate-threatened	regions of	India.	SSP	widely	advocates	for	changing	public	policy	in	favour	of	recognizing	grassroots	women’s collectives	in	their	new	roles	as	community	resource	persons/community	level	facilitators,	and leaders	and shares	these	learnings	widely	with	peer	networks	and	institutions	globally.	Our	work,	by	choice,	is	centred around	low-income	climate-threatened	communities	across	India.

 SSP’s solution, the Women-Led Climate Resilient Farming (WCRF) model seeks to integrate women’s empowerment as part of its strategy and design by building overall economic and social resilience towards the long-term sustainability of women and their households in rural agrarian communities. The project strategy aims to close this last-mile connectivity gap through a careful selection and inclusion of women’s groups and by putting power in the hands of women so they are in the driving seat instead of being mere bystanders. SSP will align with National flagship programs by connecting vital dots, the multi-sectoral approach becomes widely relevant as it closely aligns with the Agriculture Mission, focus on Zero Budget Natural Farming and national rural employment and the water conservation program dedicated to creating awareness and improving conservation. These programs are selected as they are unique as they emphasize community involvement, self-help, and convergence. SSP promotes a multi-level, multi-pronged approach to build capacities of small and marginal farming households for combatting drought. The approach focuses on creating a cadre of women such as Samvad Sahayaks or the Community Resource Persons (CRPs) on climate resilience farming strategies. 
 a. Empower and transform rural women as changemakers and local leaders in agriculture with a view to promoting resilient livelihoods and climate-positive food systemsb. Promote the use of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides as the primary farm input, and encourage optimisation of water through micro-irrigation, rainwater harvesting structures, and local drought-tolerant cropsc. Pilot the use and success of biodigesters to produce natural organic matter for farming to attain circular economy, and promote low-cost clean cooking practices.d. Engage with the policymakers (e.g., National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture) and other key governmental stakeholders (e.g., KVKs, ATMA, SRLMs etc.) to provide an enabling environment for innovative practice to thrive and scale.e. Bring together key ecosystem partners – policymakers, donor institutions (set up a funder’s platform to discuss the way forward in this space), implementation agencies, government departments etc., and harness their collaborative effort and scale adoption meaningfully and effectivelyf.
