Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

TANKER UPDATE: We have completed 29 years of service for the underprivileged with kidney ailments. With able support from well wishers, we have meaningfully contributed to healthcare, research, training and advocacy connected to kidney disease. From June 1993 till February 2023, TANKER has provided 547,176 free and subsidized dialysis for 2496 patients. We have also given financial support of Rs. 4 Crores to 4814 patients for transplantation, medication, investigation and fistula surgery costs. Our Fourteen subsidized dialysis units have a total of 220 Dialysis Machines and are situated in 1. This is the first of its kind in India.  Subsequently we also helped open an HIV facility with 3 machines in Parumala, Kerala. We also support Kerala Kidney Research Foundation (KKRF), which provides free and subsidized dialysis at Tiruvalla Medical Mission, SH Hospital, Kottayam and PVS Hospital, Kochi. We have recently also donated 4 machines worth Rs. 24 Lakhs to KKRF. In February 2016, TANKER helped Catholic Mission Centre Hospital, Imphal, Manipur with 4 machines and equipment worth Rs. 33 Lakhs. We have enabled the opening of two dialysis units one each in Pillar Hospital, Port Blair, Andaman Islands with Rotary Club of Guindy and Lawley Hospital, Coonoor with Rotary Club of Nilgiris. TANKER along with The Madras Medical Mission has donated a machine to the Dar es salaam General Hospital in Tanzania. Almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year. It is the third largest killer after malignancy and heart disease. Along with helping our patients, spreading the word about kidney disease is equally important to TANKER. We have reached out to more than 1.92 lakh people with the 1344 Awareness Programmes we conducted at schools, colleges, law enforcement offices and public forums. We have also screened 38,000 individuals for early detection of kidney disease through our 468 screening camps. As the field of research in kidney diseases requires more attention and guidance in India, TANKER also gives awards for research in Nephrology and Service to the tune of Rs. 9 lakhs every year. We are continuing to provide dialysis for all our patients through our 14 dialysis units. Dialysis is a lifesaving procedure for kidney patients. This pandemic has made many dialysis centers close down due to spread of infection. TANKER is fighting against all odds to ensure support to the underprivileged who otherwise do not have an option. Our staff, who are the Angels on earth as we call them, are risking their lives and providing dialysis against all odds. We too faced the challenges of COVID affecting staff and patients, but we have ensured continuity of our Units. We are constantly incurring extra expenditure purchasing, PPE Kits, sanitizers, fogging machines and other necessary protective gears. We are recruiting additional staff to overcome shortage of staff due to infection and quarantine following that. Our patients who are daily wage earners are struggling to purchase medicines as they are rendered jobless. We are trying our best to provide medicines for such patients. We also help post-transplant patients with financial assistance for their medication. The requests for this have increased many folds. We also wish to add on dialysis machines at Injambakkam and Valasarawakkam to help more patients. We require funds to make all this happen continuously especially during this Pandemic. 
 Provide PPE Kits and other protective gears to our staff and patients. To help more patients with medication and investigation costs and for fistula surgery. To do COVID test for our staff periodically at our cost and ensure their safety. We would like to add new machines at Valasarawakkam and Injambakkam our new units to ensure more patients can be helped. To buy fumigation machines and to fumigate our units regularly to prevent spread of infection. To recruit staff as standby to ensure continuity in providing dialysis. 
 To help kidney patients to lead a peaceful life when they are rendered jobless due to this Pandemic. We believe every person has the right to good medication irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, gender or financial status.

Life Saving During Pandemic

To provide free and subsidized dialysis to the underprivileged suffering from chronic kidney diseases. We believe that no patient should be denied treatment because of financial constraints and everyone has the right to good healthcare. 
 TANKER (Tamilnad Kidney Research) Foundation is a registered non-profit charitable trust which was founded by Dr. Georgi Abraham and like-minded people in June 1993 with the main aim of providing subsidized dialysis and financial assistance for transplantation, medication and investigation costs to the underprivileged with kidney disease. TANKER Foundation also does awareness programmes on kidney disease and screening camps for early detection of kidney disease.We have completed 24 years of service for the underprivileged with kidney ailments. We have meaningfully contributed to healthcare, research, training and advocacy related to kidney diseases. TANKER has provided 242,297 free and subsidized dialysis for 1265 patients. We have also given financial support of Rs. 145 lakhs to 2923 patients as one-time contributions ranging from Rs. 5,000/- to Rs. 50,000/- for transplantation, medication, investigation and fistula surgery costs.Our six subsidized dialysis units have a total of 72 dialysis stations situated in Ambattur Rotary Hospital, Chennai, TVS Hospital, Chokkikulam, Madurai, RVS College of Nursing, Kannampalayam, Coimbatore, Corporation P.H.C, Nungambakkam along with RCME Chennai, in Thiruverkadu with RCMW Chennai and in Vellore with RCVF. We do 3284 dialyses per month, of which 2648 are free of cost. 
 Only few government hospitals provide free dialysis for patients. Many underprivileged people cannot afford the treatment of dialysis in private hospitals due to high cost. Hence, there is an absolute need to provide free and subsidized dialysis for the poor. Long term maintenance dialysis is needed for patients who cannot afford to have a transplant/ do not have a donor/have other complications. TANKER gives free, subsidized and long term dialysis for the poor and needy.Healthy kidneys produce a hormone called Erythropoietin (EPO). EPO prompts the bone marrow to make red blood cells, which then carry oxygen throughout the body. When the kidneys are diseased or damaged, they do not make enough EPO. As a result, the bone marrow makes fewer red blood cells, causing anaemia. Anaemia is an independent predictor of death in stable coronary artery disease patients with CKD.The required dose of EPO is 50 to 100 units/kg body weight/week; that is on an average it is 4000 to 6000 units of EPO / week along with Iron sucrose 100 mg. This medicine is required in these dialysis patients as long as they live on dialysis.All kidney transplant patients are required to take anti-rejection medication for the rest of their lives. The monthly expenses for their medicine is nearly Rs.10,000/-. TANKER provided medicines worth Rs. 10,000/- to the underprivileged patients.

Helping the underprivileged with kidney ailments

Pandemic seems to be staying with us longer than expected. Our staff have been warriors daring all odds and serving the needy patients. It is our foremost duty and responsibility to safeguard their health from this dreaded COVID VIRUS. Buying these protective gears is an additional unexpected expense for us when all the prices of medicines, masks, gloves etc. have soared with the never ending demand. 
 We will be providing our staff, patients and patient attenders with protective materials needed to safeguard them for being affected by COVID. We use PPE materials like, full sleeved gown, masks (N95), gloves, surgical masks, head caps, face shield, shoe covers, sanitizers for staff and for the patients we use sanitizers, masks and drape sheets to cover the bed. We also help the patient attenders with masks and sanitizers. Kidney patients are prone to get infected as their immunity is compromised and so helping to protect them is more important. 
 We will be providing the staff, patient and their families peace and give them hope that we will stand by them in times of need. The impact this will create is immeasurable and it is highly valuable.

Blood Pressure is a Silent Killer. Hypertension, even when severe, may not give rise to any symptoms. It is extremely important to keep the blood pressure under contral control as it is crucial in reducing the risks of complications of Chronic Illnesses. Hypertension is a serious medical condition which significantly increases risks of heart, brain, kidney and other diseasesAn estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30-37 years globally have hypertension, most 2/3 living in low and middle income countries. Special occupational groups, for example, the police personnel, have been found world over to have hyper tension. Police force provides continuous service to the civilians. They have to serve round the clock for proper investigation, safety, and justice. Police work has been regarded by some researchers as one of the most stressful occupations in the world. Hypertension is also major cause of premature death worldwide. 
 In this modern era, chronic noncommunicable diseases are a major global health challenge with numerous grave complications on the human body. Reducing BP is the need of the hour.We have chosen as our Project for World Kidney Day this year , which falls in March every year, to create awareness on the importance of checking blood pressure and the need to keep hypertension under control. Since we are aware of the tensions that our Police Personnel go through on a daily basis, we have decided to equip all our Police Stations in entire Tamil Nadu, with a digital BP checking apparatus. Initially we will be providing the104 police stations in Chennai and in a phased manner we propose to cover all stations in Tamilnadu. 
 A blood pressure test measures the pressure in your arteries as your heart pumps. BP is always taken only when we visit our Dr's. With the police on call 24X7, they never find time to go for regular checks, which is much needed. Monitoring your blood pressure can help you and your doctor identify any issues early on. If treatment is needed, it’s better to start it earlier before any damage has occurred to the blood vessels. So this regular monitoring in the work place will save the police from getting a Stroke, Dementia, Heart Attack, Kidney Failure, Vision Loss to name a few of the non communicable diseases.
