And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. "The Society for Door Step Schools" was established in Mumbai, India in 1989 with the aim of addressing illiteracy amongst the marginalized sections of society. The school provides education and support to the often-forgotten children of pavement and slum dwellers, construction site families and many other underprivileged families. Many of these children are not enrolled in school and have limited access to books and a place to study. Additionally, many of these children are forced to drop out of school to work or care for younger children. With neither support nor resources at home, these children too often suffer from very low learning levels. At Door Step School, we are trying to bridge this gap by bringing education to the “Doorstep” of these underprivileged children.In 2018-19, we have reached approximate1,00,000 children through various programs in Pune and Mumbai.

The construction site workers migrate from various states from India to big cities in search of better employment opportunities. Hence, once the parents of these kids leave for work, the children of these workers are left behind, unattended. Most of them are not aware of the nearby schools. Hence, they do not enroll their children in school. As both parents are working, children age 6-14 take care responsibility of the households and their younger siblings.   
 We set up education activity centers near labor camps of the construction sites, Bricklin, sugar factories, etc. At these centers, we run study classes for children age 6-14, pre-primary classes for 3-6 year old and daycare facility for 0-3 year old. We enroll all children of the age group 6-14 years in government schools. We prepare children for enrolling &amp; retaining in school through literacy classes, provide educational help and reference books to school going children with their regular studies. To improve the reading skills of children, we provide them easy access to a variety of reading material. In pre-primary classes, we provide educational toys, art and craft material and conduct various games for overall development. We also conduct awareness sessions for parents regarding the education of their children. If required, we also provide school transportation facilities to these children.

COVID-19 has affected all of us in different ways. It has caused a great setback to SDGs 2030. SDG 4 - Quality Education has been a great challenge in low-income communities. Even though schools made an effort to continue the new academic session by moving to online mode; neither the teachers were prepared nor our curriculum was designed for online teaching. Besides the digital divide magnified the challenges manifold. Children have been out of school for more than two academic sessions. Children esp. in 5 to 7 years have not been enrolled in schools. When schools resume, age-appropriate enrolment according to RTE will land these kids in higher classes. Even for older children who were enrolled in schools, lack of resources has dropped the learning levels of children to a new low. All this will drive children to drop out of school. A <a href="https://azimpremjiuniversity.edu.in/field-studies-in-education/loss-of-learning-during-the-pandemic" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">report on Loss of Learning published by Azim Premji University</a> in June 2020 indicates that more than 80% children are suffering from loss of at least one language or mathematical ability. During the pandemic older children took up traditional occupations to lend a helping hand. Getting these children back to school is going to be another challenge. 
 To address the problem of learning loss on a war footing, Door Step School, Pune launched Project Phoenix on 25th October 2021. The idea is to prepare children (6 to 14 years) with basic reading, writing and numeracy skills (Foundational Literacy and Numeracy - FLN) before schools reopen; This is in line with the National Education Policy 2020.·      Conduct surveys to identify children in the age group of 6 to 14 years. ·      Administer DSS Reading Ability Test to identify and map children to their current reading level·      120-day intervention begins – a.                  Form groups of children (15 to 20) according to their learning levels*b.                  Make child centric day-wise planc.                  Classes will be conducted for 1.5 hours, Monday through Fridayd.                  Saturdays are reserved for teachers – planning, training, documentation etc. ·      Continue handholding of children who reach expected reading level by giving them exposure to variety of reading material for another 1 to 1.5 months to hone their reading skills. ·      Child completes the course only when he/she finishes reading 25 books and activities related to them·      Assessment and Reporting – a.                  Track weekly progress of each child to make course corrections if any b.                  Fortnightly progress on Reading levelc.                   End of project report

This will ensure that they do not drop out of school or lag behind in school and hence are able to continue their education. Continuation of schooling and hence education of children is an important aspect of the educational health of any nation. Since the launch of project in Oct 2021, we have already reached 18,000+ children and aim to reach more than 25,000 children. This project is highly scalable as we can reach many more children depending on the funds received.
