“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Introduction Mr. K. Venkata Rao was born in a small and remote village named Korra, Dumbrigudamandal of Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1970. He belongs to a poor tribal family. He studied in tribal welfare hostels in Kinchumanda, Dumbriguda. After completing intermediate, he came back to his village and realized that tribes in his area were suppressed by outsiders. That made him start the awareness gatherings about the facilities provided by the Government sessions to the tribal people. He started this work for the rights and entitlement of tribes in 1990. He individually identified issues of tribes and brought these issues to the notice of district collectors and the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) Project officer (PO). During that period Mr Somesh Kumar IAS officer appointed as ITDA, PO of Paderu ITDA. He identified Mr K Venkta Rao and asked him to find an organization, so issues of tribes can be effectively addressed. So, he founded an organization named Tribal Educational Rural Development Society (TERDS) on 23rd August 1993.The VisionThe vision of the organization is to Create a self-reliant and empowered tribal society by promoting the rights of the most marginalized integrated Adivasi communities into mainstream development processes.Intervenes and achievementsTERDS mainly work among tribal communities the major interventions are tribal rights and entitlements, woman empowerment, Health education, food security, and environmental protection.Tribal rights and entitlements:<ul><li>Tribal Empowerment</li></ul>o   TERDS is regularly providing awareness on tribal rights and entitlement that are provided through different schemas and Government programs, especially through ITDS to the unreached tribal communities in 4 manuals of Visakhaptnme districts Araku valley, Dumbriguda, Anantagiri, and Hukampetamandals. TERDS is able to reach more than 10000 households in this region.<ul><li>Empowerment of Primitive Tribal Groups (PVTGs):</li></ul>§ As part of its work among the Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs), TERDS is carrying out an initiative ‘Empowerment and Integrated Development of 8 PTG communities present in Andhra Pradesh”. TERDS is convening an NGO network headed by PTG communities named as Andhra Pradesh Adama Adivasi Development Initiative (AAADI) (PTG) Network. The 8 partner NGOs headed by 8 different PTGs are present in 6 districts of Andhra Pradesh.   Woman empowerment·        Thrift Programme and SHGs: § The concept of SHG was introduced by TERDS in the Paderudevision. A total of 106 thrift groups are functioning in 94 tribal villages of the TERDS operational area. Each thrift group consists of 8-25 members and each member saves Rs.10/- to Rs. 30/- per month. These thrift groups are spread over 6-gram panchayats namely Korra Panchayat and Pothangi panchayats of Dumbrigudamandal, Painumpadu panchayat of Ananthagirimandal, Guttam panchayat, Boorja panchayat, and Kontapalli panchayat of Hukumpetamandal. <ul><li>The total membership of thrift groups is 1560</li><li>At present, 27 thrift groups are developed to grade “A”,</li><li>Joined the Micro Level Credit Plan and benefited Rs. 13,50,000/-.</li><li>All thrift groups are good at bookkeeping, internal lending, and conducting monthly meetings.</li></ul>Education&amp; Health·        Initiatives on Tribal Education:§ Spread of formal education among tribal communities is one of the primary concerns of TERDS. In this context, TERDS is facilitating the process of forming Village Educational Committees and organizing meetings to convince parents in sending their children to the schools. Apart from sensitizing parents on the importance of education, TERDS volunteers are extending support to tribal students during school/college admissions.<ul><li>TERDS has been running 7 primary schools in remote tribal hamlets with the support of ‘ Dorabji TATA Trust’.</li><li>Such schools are located at K. Panasaput, Livitiputtu, Jodimamidi, and Jakaramvalasa villages in Pottangi gram panchayat of Dumbrigudamandal; Masada, Panasaputtu in Hukumpetamandal and Dondavalasa in Painampadu gram panchayat of Ananthagirimandal.  </li><li>7 volunteers and 7 days are extending services to impart education in the schools</li><li>As many as 243 students are studying in the schools following the curriculum developed by the Trust</li></ul>OrphanageTERDS is taken up an orphanage for girl children since November 2010. The orphanage is situated at Chinaburgulaputvillag of Hukampatmandal of Visakhapatnam district. It is called PRATYUSHA CHILDREN HOME. There are 75 tribal girl children in the orphanage. All are below 13 years and studying between 1st standard to 10th standard. All belong to tribal communitiesPromotion of Health Facilities:As part of its health initiatives, TERDS is attempting to balance both traditional and modern medical services to promote health among tribal communities. TERDS has been organizing awareness programs on several health issues especially seasonal malaria, the importance of hygiene, and sanitation to prevent water-borne diseases. TERDS strategizes to carry out health awareness by involving the staff of the government health department.<ul><li>Conducted health camp at G. Boddaput with the help of local PHC staff. As many as 250 tribal men, women, and children from surrounding villages received treatment.</li><li>Organized three eye camps in G. Boddaput and UppaBairodivalasa of Hukumpetamandal and Domangi of Dumbrigudamandal with financial support from District Blindness Control and RegionalEyeHospital, Visakhapatnam. Nearly 125 people were operated on for cataracts at Visakha Eye Hospital.</li><li>Three health camps were conducted on “Tooth Decay” with the cooperation of the doctors of NIMS, Hyderabad. 42 persons underwent treatment in the camp.</li><li>The training program was conducted for 70 CHWs</li></ul>Food security<ul><li>Promotion of Grain Banks:</li></ul>As part of a food security program, TERDS has been initiating activities in 94 villages. Characteristically, tribal societies are subsistence-oriented and these grain banks have emerged as a significant mechanism that it is providing food security to the neediest for 6 months. <ul><li>54-grain banks were established and operating successfully</li><li>A total saving of 33,828 kgs of grains was procured through grain banks</li><li>Non-members are also given priority while utilizing the procured grains</li><li>15-grain banks were developed as grade “A” with the help of CARE-STEP</li><li>All “A” grade groups have received Rs. 6000/- each and have an amount of Rs.90, 000/-</li><li>In all-grain banks, records are maintained well and effectively resolving the disputes that may raise any</li></ul>Environment Protection<ul><li>Forest Protection: VanaSamrakshana Samitis:</li></ul>o   Ever since its inception, TERDS is associated with forest protection, conservation, and management initiatives in its operational area. Formed VanaSamrakshana Samitis (VSS) in 15 villages in Hukumpeta, Dumbriguda, and ArakuVallymandals. As part of government policy to discourage shifting cultivation, have been negotiating with the concerned government officials to evolve suitable alternatives for the tribes as 75% of local tribes practice shifting cultivation. Respecting people’s resistance against government policy to discourage shifting cultivation, lobbying with the government for policy change, and promoting horticulture.<ul><li>Submitted memorandum to concerned government officials representing the views of tribes practising shifting cultivation</li><li>Prepared a status report on ‘Shifting Cultivation</li><li>Organized distribution of coffee plantations to 30 families of Korra, Kosangi, and K.Panasaput villages</li><li>Provided 65 kgs of rice for every acre of plantation with the support of ITDA and distributed a total of 1950 kgs of rice</li><li>70 kgs of rice per acre were distributed to 30 families to carry out additional work in the coffee plantations </li><li>Displacement: Bauxite Mining, Tourism, and Land Issues:</li></ul>o   Considering large-scale mining and subsequent displacement of tribal communities in the district, TERDS has taken up issues of Bauxite mining, Tourism, and Land alienation as a long-term aspect concerning tribal rights and provisions of Scheduled Areas.<ul><li>Organized tribal communities of 13 villages in the hilly areas of ArakuVallymandal where bauxite mining is planned</li><li>When the villagers were forced to sign by the authorities, TERDS organized awareness programs for the villagers and explained the ill effects of mining and also the rights of the communities</li><li>Opposed illegal allocation of land for the construction of a cine studio to Dr Rama Naidu at K. Panasaput village, Dumbrigudamandal</li><li>Organized 30 tribal families inhabiting the village and rallied them to the government officials demanding cancellation of allocation</li><li> Pressurized the government and obtained D-Form pattas to the villagers of K.Panasaputduely cancelling land allocation for the construction of Cine studio.</li><li>Resolved conflicts of JFM groups in the villages on sharing of benefits</li><li>Several cases of the 1/70 Act were resolved at gram sabha itself and prevented further exploitation by non-tribes</li><li>Opposed the allocation of 250 acres of land belonging to 5 villages in the Kosangi area for developing a botanical garden by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (A.P.T.D.C)</li><li>Obtained D-Farm pattas to 1354 acres for podu and Banjara lands and distributed to the villagers in the operational villages</li><li>Organized the communities opposing botanical garden</li><li>Demanded compensation to the affected villages due to erecting film settings and demanded Rs.5000/- per set</li><li>Conducted gram sabha in all 5 villages and constituted a committee with 20 members to give permission for film shootings in a democratic and transparent manner.</li><li>Facilitated the villagers to solve such problems in gram sabha itself by conducting "gram sabhas" regularly</li><li>Organizing awareness programs on Resettlement and Rehabilitation Policy to the tribal communities.</li></ul>Digester<ul><li>Emergency Relief Activities: Flash Floods and Land Slides:</li></ul>o   Ever since its inception, TERDS is taking up emergency relief initiatives as and when such a situation arises. In these remote hilly regions, most such emergencies occur due to flash floods, landslides during the rainy season, and fire accidents during the summer season. In a modest way, TERDS carried out the following relief activities. <ul><li>Conducted a survey of flood damage during the 2005 and 2006 floods in the TERDS operational villages and submitted it to the concerned officials for compensation</li><li>Extended support to the villagers of Kodipunjuvalasa, Araku Valley Mandal where 19 villagers died due to landslides in 2006. The 45 staff members of TERDS contributed 2 days of salary and distributed mats and blankets worth Rs.4,000/- to the 35 families of the affected village.</li><li>Distributed utensils, cloths, rugs, food materials, and medicines to the villagers of KodipunjuValasa with the contributions collected from the partners of the CARE STEP project. </li></ul>Working with Government line departments<ul><li>MGNREGS</li><li>TERDS is part of the Andhra Pradesh NGOs Alliance(APNA). Despite many initiatives of the Govt and other agencies in the past few decades, the life of tribals needs much to be done, especially children who get orphaned due to the demise of both parent/s. Life for these children is pathetic and especially for female children. There is a need to provide a facility for such tribal girls to seek shelter in a home that provides a life of dignity and is not far away from their habitat. They need to be connected with their society and culture to sustain emotional balance. Such shelters are rare or do not exist.ProposalIt is therefore envisioned to create Pratyusha Girls Home in Araku, Dist Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in the available land for orphan girls of tribals living in the region around Araku. A max strength of 70 girls is planned at this stage. These girls attend the nearby Govt schools for pursuing their education. All efforts will have to be made to prepare these girls to lead a dignified life with self-confidence and dignity.  
 Maintenance of ChildrenWe propose to maintain children at reasonable standards and create a conducive environment, which provides them to live with dignity, self-confidence, and self-respect. A sense of belonging to the house would generate in their tiny hearts and they start enjoying the fruits of living together. They would be sent to Govt Schools, and coaching will be provided at Home. We also plan to provide them with various options to settle in their lives based on their aspiration, aptitude, and capability. These are continuous activities that shall be undertaken by suitable people. In and around Visakhapatnam, many good-hearted people are willing to guide the children with their mentorship, sharing their talents, coaching them, and teaching various skills including dance, craft, etc. We will also depend on civil society and involve them to ensure righteous and all-around growth for the Pratyusha Girls.Accepting Girls as inmates would be done gradually as we build up our capacity to take care of them. Being a remote area, there will be plenty of challenges to getting suitable manpower to run the Home. A deliberate increase in inmates would be smoother concurrent with the capacity building of the TERDS to take care of the inmates.  
 TERDS is exclusively working among the tribal communities and is a tribal-headed organization. It is working in 458 tribal villages (habitations) situated in Hukumpeta, Anantagiri, and Dumbriguda Mandal of the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh.
