For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Established in 2000 and registered in 2002, Turning Point Foundation is a charitable organization aimed at intervening the issues related to health, education and livelihood to the hard to reach and disadvantaged group of population in our society. For this purpose, presently the organization is running two different projects in Delhi1.      Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), supported by Government of India located at Alipur, North Delhi). Indoor treatment facilities are provided to the people who dependent on drugs, alcohol or related addictive substances.2.     Youth Resource Centre (YRC) supported by MDSOG, at Azadpur, North Delhi. The goal of the project is to provide knowledge and skills for young vulnerable people to earn a reasonable living so that they are not at risk of being drawn into unsafe social and unhealthy behaviours. Each batch has 1.30 hours of training time every day. 2.      Digital Unify Programme (Digital Literacy): The Informatics and Computer Basics (ICB) course within the Digital Unify Programme is composed of five modules and covers basic understanding of MS Office and Internet tools and their usage, and responsible of use of Information and Communication Technology. 3.      Basic Computer Course: This is a basic course having a curriculum for 4 months where Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet usage is taught. 4.      Basic English: For students who are weak in English and studying in schools. Many students were able pick up with their school curriculum after learning basics of English. 5.      Informal Education (Basic Hindi): Many children who are attending schools and adult ladies who lacks basics of Hindi and that is why they are finding difficult to continue their school studies. The course will enable them to set basics of Hindi language and continue their studies.  6.      Menstrual Health &amp; Hygiene Sessions: Menstrual Health &amp; Hygiene in collaboration with Group of Friends Welfare Trust (GoFWT), Delhi community adolescence and women in batches. 7.      In-house sessions on health &amp; Life Skills: YRC is also providing health education including Personal Hygiene, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS &amp; Drug abuse awareness along with Life skills education. The aim of these sessions is to enable the young people to have informed choices in their life decisions. 8.      Career Guidance and support: YRC provides various information on career guidance, school/college admissions, job hunting and other information to make a suitable choice for their future. YRC also play as a facilitation centre for young people who want to access internet to avail various schemes/application process for educational support. 9.      Celebration of National, Social and Cultural festival: These occasions are made use of recreation and improving bonds among youth as well as to impart knowledge about various subjects.

In Panipat there are many injecting drug users (IDUs) and rag pickers who are at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Turning Point Foundation was set up in order to provide these people with resources that will tentatively put them on the road to recovery.

Our drop in centre not only provides clean needle syringes, medical care and abscess management but also free lunches as the Indian government don’t budget for food within ordinary drop in centres.30 malnourished and poor drug users are now given healthy lunchtime meals by our organisation. We hope that by providing IDUs and rag pickers with food, they are more inclined to seek clinical help from us, as well as counselling.

In a year, we expect to be able to reach out and help 300 people and encourage them to access services freely available to them.

Today, the country has the world's second-largest population suffering from HIV/AIDS.Moreover, in India, HIV/AIDS is a medical as well as social issue. It affects people’s livelihood, self-respect and social status; it breaks up families and isolates those affected from the community. It is extremely important to inform people, especially the vulnerable, of preventive measures against HIV-AIDS. 
 TPF is establishing 12 Information, Education and Communication (IEC) camps concerning HIV/AIDS and the ill-effects of drug abuse. It aims to build a community who restrain themselves from the use of drugs, alcohol abuse and dangerous behaviour. This programme educates and empowers people enabling them to make informed and healthy choices. Our aim is to reach out to youths and propagate the ill-effects of drug-addiction. 
 We are spreading awareness among the vulnerable and the young regarding the ill-effects of drug-abuse and preventive measures against HIV/AIDS. Your contribution of Rs. 1000 can ensure that we reach out and prevent the premature death of thousands of people.

We also provide free treatment for their infections and other minor health problems.
