Srichand joined Vidya and Child in 2003 when he was part of a government school in Class 8. He applied to us to admit him into an English medium mainstream school but his track record at the government school was unsatisfactory and we were unsure if he was truly committed to his studies. However, after a few months of working hard he was able to prove to us that he deserved a chance.

Srichand was admitted into a mainstream school once he reached class 9. A very hard-working student, his record of attendance is commendable and his academics are just as impressive. Once he reached class 12, Srichand started working part-time in an office.

Today, Srichand is proud to have graduated from his school with five years working experience in tow. His educational success and occupational experience has led him into a physical fitness teacher role at the Pathways International School in Noida.

Slow start, flourishing future

Sunita, a bright student who comes from a humble background, was admitted into an average private school. She was also a student at our evening tuition classes as she wanted to be part of an institution that complimented her potential.

We were touched by her sincerity and we decided to fund her admission to a school where her abilities could be fully appreciated. She also joined our evening dance class which helped to boost her confidence and self-esteem.

After four years with us, we admitted her into class 6 of a mainstream English medium school in 2006-2007. Sunita is now in class 10 and being one of the brightest students in her class, her teachers talk about her with delight. She is also an excellent Kathak dancer, regularly appearing on stage in front of many people.

In India, 53% of children under the age of 10 do not receive any formal education. Most of these children end up as child labourers. Children who do manage to receive some form of education are constantly treated unequally and trail behind students who attend formal schools for job opportunities. 
 Our programme reaches out to the children of migrant labourers engaged in low-paying jobs as plumbers, rickshaw pullers and domestic helpers. At our school, the students study until they complete primary education.We follow a level based curriculum where children are allowed to learn at their own pace. On completion of primary school education, the students are enrolled into a mainstream school. This programme supports the education of these students until the completion of their high school education. To help them keep up with other pupils and overcome initial adjustment issues, we hold evening classes within our After School Support programme. 
 We have mainstreamed over 100 children into formal schools and monitor their progress regularly. We intend to enrol over 1000 children by the end of this project and require your support to achieve it.

 We have a non-formal education program that takes into account the background of our students. We have designed a customised curriculum that makes it easier for disadvantaged children to eventually get into mainstream schooling. Our programme reaches out to children of low-income urban migrants, like plumbers, rickshaw pullers, carpenters, drivers and domestic helpers.Classes are conducted for students from elementary to secondary level. We follow a level based curriculum where children learn at their own pace. We also have a Parent-Outreach session, where volunteers encourage parents (especially girls’ parents) to enrol into our programme. 
 We have over 900 beneficiaries, each of whom will be prepared for regular schooling by the end of our project. Our organisation also takes care of admitting these children into regular schools. You can be a part of all this by making a small donation.
