“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. Cattle, bred for profit and abandoned after they stop producing milk, are often found malnourished, injured or sick on city streets. Many face bitter winters, starvation and death in road accidents - a sad fate for cows in a country where they are revered by lakhs of people. To save cows from such a sad end, Swami Ishwar Das started Shree Krishnayan Desi Gaushala, currently home to 18,000+ abandoned cows. But with the rising costs of fodder and medicines, he is struggling to provide the quality of care such mistreated animals deserve. “It was in 2010 when I witnessed abandoned cows from the streets in Uttarakhand being transported in a truck. The cows were administered anesthesia and stacked one above the other like lifeless goods. When me and a few of my acquaintances brought the cows off the truck, two of them died before my eyes and that sight shook me to the core. It was then that I started Shree Krishnayan Gaushala with 11 abandoned cows in a small donated land,” says Swami Ishwar Das.Swami Ishwar Das is unable to bear the rising cost of nutrition and medical care for injured cows and needs support to continue to save these voiceless animals. Our organisation runs various projects within water resource management, women empowerment, health and hygiene, and child education for the underprivileged in the Amreli, Junagad, Bhavnagar and Diu districts of Gujarat. The high fluoride content (five parts per million) in the water available in many rural areas of Gujarat has made it completely undrinkable. We addressed the issue by providing water to around 4,260 villagers living in and around 40 villages and initiated roof rain water harvesting structures for over 60 families in Amreli district. We also run health and sanitation awareness programmes to focus on healthy, hygiene practices and the importance of safe drinking water. To improve the communities’ livelihood prospects, we focus on capacity building, advocacy and other finance and management services. We also run crèche centres for children below the age of three and have provided over 2,265 children with school supplies and uniforms to encourage their attendance.

Biogas plants can be a real money saver in rural regions as most women in these areas travel unrealistic distances to fetch firewood to use as cooking fuel. As a result of this, VSK initiated the project in Tared, Bhavnagar. Now women no longer have to worry about collecting firewood nor are they dependent on the monsoon season.

Our projects are giving villagers a new and improved way of life; everything from maintaining the environment to making life just that little bit easier for hard-working women.

Biogas plants revolutionise Bhavnagar women

A number of villages in Bhavnagar, such as Tared and Talgajarda, often face shortages of water due to erratic rainfall and extreme or prolonged droughts. The rainfall can go as low as 650 mm.

The natural spring used by the community also dried up due to seismic activity. Women were forced to travel long distances every day before they could carry back enough water from streams or channels for their family.

Vikas Samarthanam Kendra (VSK) started educating people about roof rain water harvesting systems as an alternative and reliable source of water. We followed a five-step programme that included creating awareness, community training, increasing water levels, ground water recharge and training people on the productive use of water.

VSK set up over 60 roof rain water harvesting structures in both villages. Now families are enjoying healthy, easily accessible water, a commodity that should never be an issue.

Ratol village in Bhavnagar, Gujarat struggles with water and sanitation while sources of income are limited and infrastructural facilities are poor. As a matter of fact, very few houses have access to their own toilets which could lead to serious sanitation related health issues. 
 We are setting up ecological toilets in every house of the village. We are also running a Solid Waste Management programme under which we set up biogas plants and ecological latrines in each home. This not only improves facilities but also acts as a prime source of compost manure, as biogas plants are used to generate fuel. 
 Over 1,100 people will benefit from getting easy access to clean toilets. They would also benefit from the production of biogas which is not only a non-polluting, renewable source of energy but also much cheaper in comparison to other kitchen fuels. It also reduces the amount of effort women have to put in to fetch firewood, or cooking with smoke-filled kitchens. Every donation of Rs. 1,002 will help a villager to live hygienically while using efficient ecological fuel.

Rural Gujarat has several drought prone regions. The average rainfall varies from 33 to 152 centimeters a year and the water available is often unfit for drinking due to its high fluoride content. Disadvantaged rural women spend half their day routinely collecting water by walking 2-5 kilometres to the source. Often girls drop out of school to assist their mothers in collecting water for drinking and domestic needs. 
 We construct roof rain water harvesting systems to individual houses so that families have access to safe drinking water.After 60 structures were successfully constructed in the Amreli district, we are now covering all villages in the Mahuva block of Bhavnagar district. Once the structure is built, the roof collects rainwater in storage cellars that are installed underground and consists of filtration systems. Finally, the water stored in the tank is clean and fit for drinking, washing and other purposes. 
 We plan to provide access to safe drinking water to 480 families by installing roof rain water harvesting structures in their homes.A small donation of Rs. 2,186 will make sure that women don’t have to travel long distances and spend half the day collecting water for their families.
