“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. Cattle, bred for profit and abandoned after they stop producing milk, are often found malnourished, injured or sick on city streets. Many face bitter winters, starvation and death in road accidents - a sad fate for cows in a country where they are revered by lakhs of people. To save cows from such a sad end, Swami Ishwar Das started Shree Krishnayan Desi Gaushala, currently home to 18,000+ abandoned cows. But with the rising costs of fodder and medicines, he is struggling to provide the quality of care such mistreated animals deserve. “It was in 2010 when I witnessed abandoned cows from the streets in Uttarakhand being transported in a truck. The cows were administered anesthesia and stacked one above the other like lifeless goods. When me and a few of my acquaintances brought the cows off the truck, two of them died before my eyes and that sight shook me to the core. It was then that I started Shree Krishnayan Gaushala with 11 abandoned cows in a small donated land,” says Swami Ishwar Das.Swami Ishwar Das is unable to bear the rising cost of nutrition and medical care for injured cows and needs support to continue to save these voiceless animals. The NGO - Shree Krishnayan Desi Gauraksha Avam Golokdham Seva Samiti - spares no expense in providing nutrition either. Kalburgi is known for its high quality and voluminous production of pulses. Small and Marginal Farmers are barely able to make their ends meet from sales of their raw produce. They are also adversely affected by low productivity (30-40% of potential levels), high variability in production and quality, with low scale operations (smallholding, rain-fed, climatic variability). Farmers currently sell their produce in raw form. That produce is passed through a network of intermediaries that includes several layers of traders, processing mills, and wholesalers/retailers. Farmers are systematically exploited in this process due to asymmetries in information and inefficiencies in this chain. Ultimately, the farmer receives less than 1/3 of the retail price for processed dals 
 To address the needs of the Farmers and provide various services to them, Kagina Farmers Producer Organization was setup with a seed grant from Small Farmers Agri Business Consortium- with the help of a jointly approved scheme called Building and sustaining farmer’s producer Organisation for Pulses, Karnataka under RKVY initiative grant to promote small farmer’s producer organizationsVRUTTI has helped identify the machinery which will be used to process multiple pulses. To set up such a unit, costs upwards of 10 lakhs rupees is required excluding the land which will be provided for by the community. Once operational, the venture would purchase raw produce directly from the farmers at a rate Rs. 2-3 per kg more than what they are receiving in the market. After processing, the entity would sell the processed dal to wholesalers or directly to large retailers. The community will be providing the land required for the proposed unit while Vrutti will provide the necessary training and handholding support. 
 The impact will be manifold. The beneficiaries will comprise of members associated with supply of raw materials to processing mills. Around 100 farmer members will be benefited by marketing of pulses seeds with better prices for pulses mill located at local place. This will cut their transportation cost too. It will provide a boost to employment, 15 more entrepreneurs will be created at local village level from pulses processing. By eliminating the concept of innumerable intermediaries, they will earn extra income of Rs 750 to 1000 per month in form of wages. The consumers will also be a winner as they will get these pulses locally at reasonable rates.

Help small farmers earn livelihood through value added activities

Due to the covid19 lockdown, one of the most affected communities are small &amp; marginal farmers. Agriculture operations come to a standstill due to lack of labours, non-availability of machineries, government restrictions on transportation etc. which affects the production, harvest and post harvest management aspects. APMCs and Mandis are closed, resulting in losses,  distress sale of products by the farmers for lower prices and unable to repay the loans availed from banks and other financial institutions. The immediate relief support provided by the Government in terms of free ration and Kisan Samman Nidhi (Rs.2000) support is inadequate to recover &amp; rebuild their livelihoods. Given the current status, it will be very difficult for farmers to repay their existing loans and also avail new loans for the upcoming crop production. Our initiative focuses on providing them one acre kit at free of cost for the most needy small farmers which will enable them to take up cultivation in the upcoming Kharif season. 
 Our initiative aims at supporting 1200 small &amp; marginal farmers severely affected by covid-19 in Bagepalli in Karnataka and Bankhedi &amp; Rehti in Madhya Pradesh. These farmers are shareholders of the Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) promoted and being supported by Vrutti. These 1200 farmers have been identified by the FPOs based on criteria such as farmers who have lost their livelihoods completely, do not have any alternate source of income and those who are not able to get any external support so far. These farmers will be provided one acre farming kit which will include good quality seeds, bio-fertilisers and growth promoters. This will help the farmers to take up the cultivation for the upcoming kharif season who will otherwise go into debt trap. Each package will cost about Rs.3000 and will be distributed by the FPOs with a buy back arrangement between the farmers and the FPO. This will also benefit FPO to generate revenue from the business transactions. 	 
 <ul><li>Farmers will be prevented from availing credit from informal source at a higher interest rate </li><li>Employment opportunities for landless labourers and in-migrants </li><li>Farmers livelihood is taken care with dignity and empathy </li></ul>
