If they are ill or injured, they are never given treatment. They are tied up in small spaces. Where there is space barely for 10, they keep 20, 30 or even 40 buffaloes. And these animals spend their entire life in these painful conditions", says Dr Asher Jesudoss, Director, People For Animals (PFA) Public Policy Foundation, who has been fighting abuse of farmed animals.According to him, several crude, illegal and violent methods/practices are used to extract milk from cattle, which leave thousands with illnesses. “Labour pains are induced in cattle by injecting drugs; they are made to forcefully let down milk twice a day unnaturally. Their calves are pulled away and are not allowed to drink their mother’s milk. Cattle, bred for profit and abandoned after they stop producing milk, are often found malnourished, injured or sick on city streets. Many face bitter winters, starvation and death in road accidents - a sad fate for cows in a country where they are revered by lakhs of people. To save cows from such a sad end, Swami Ishwar Das started Shree Krishnayan Desi Gaushala, currently home to 18,000+ abandoned cows. But with the rising costs of fodder and medicines, he is struggling to provide the quality of care such mistreated animals deserve. “It was in 2010 when I witnessed abandoned cows from the streets in Uttarakhand being transported in a truck. The cows were administered anesthesia and stacked one above the other like lifeless goods. When me and a few of my acquaintances brought the cows off the truck, two of them died before my eyes and that sight shook me to the core. It was then that I started Shree Krishnayan Gaushala with 11 abandoned cows in a small donated land,” says Swami Ishwar Das.Swami Ishwar Das is unable to bear the rising cost of nutrition and medical care for injured cows and needs support to continue to save these voiceless animals. For over 400 years, a nomadic tribe known as the Kalandars began ‘dancing’ sloth bears and over centuries, the ‘dancing’ bear trade transitioned to become entertainment for villagers and tourists who paid to watch the bears jump in agony. The practice of dancing bears was made illegal in India when the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 came into effect. However, innocent cubs are still captured from the wild and the illegal trade of bears continues to prevail in and around India. Wildlife SOS has and continues to work towards protecting wild sloth bears that are a constant target of human exploitation. 
 After extensively investigating this illegal practice &amp; presenting a report on this issue to the government of India, Wildlife SOS began the rescue of these dancing bears. They had to start with upliftment of the Kalandar community, who depended on these bears to earn a living. To enable them to surrender their sloth bears and not exploit wildlife as a source of income and livelihood, Wildlife SOS continues to provide vocational training, education &amp; financial rehabilitation support to the families. Additionally, we works towards rescue and rehabilitation of Sloth bears in India and anti-poaching efforts to end trafficking of bear cubs. 
 The results of this project were phenomenal as over time, the Kalandars started to voluntarily surrender their bears to Wildlife SOS and choose a more sustainable future. In a historic moment in 2009, Wildlife SOS was successful in bringing an end to the ‘dancing bear’ practise by taking the last dancing bears off the streets of India Till date we have successfully rescued &amp; rehabilitated over 628 dancing bears. In fact, almost 40% of the Wildlife SOS staff comprise of members of this community. Today, these bears are given excellent medical care, nutritious diet and freedom to roam in large natural enclosures thus, living lives of dignity in environments as close to their natural habitat as possible.

The Covid-19 Pandemic has shown us the wrath of nature as wild animal trafficking &amp; exploitation continues undeterred. The pandemic is likely to have emerged from a wet market where bats, pangolins and other endangered wildlife were being slaughtered and sold for bush meat and aphrodisiac preparations. The illegal wildlife trafficking industry is a multi billion dollar industry second next to narcotics, gun running &amp; human trafficking. The concern is that combined with global warming, indiscriminate deforestation, illegal &amp; unsustainable harvesting of endangered wildlife will only result in more pandemics in the future. 
 As a social intervention non profit charity - Wildlife SOS will educate people about preventing habitat fragmentation, nature protection &amp; wildlife conservation to help reduce the human wildlife interface resulting in conflict. Our goal is to use outreach and awareness through social media and online platforms to encourage people to respect and coexist with nature in harmony. We have to protect Nature if humans want to stay alive &amp; survive on planet earth! Wildlife SOS aims to create awareness and educate people on how to protect nature and co-exist with wildlife in harmony.Our Hotlines, rescue teams &amp; medical facilities continue to function during Covid lockdown and we need to raise financial resources to procure life saving medical equipment, PPE kits, food &amp; medical supplies, logistics etc which is the need of the hour to continue our work. 
 The impact we hope to achieve is to use our outreach &amp; education to draw urgent attention about the intricate connection between humans and other creatures on this planet. An increased appreciation towards nature and tolerance towards wildlife and animals is urgently needed. Rampant pollution and dumping of trash needs to be reconsidered. A change in human mindset where they adapt responsible behaviour towards nature and animals is a necessity. Create compassion in the minds of people and prevent such pandemics in the future.
